Most conversations about leadership I have witnessed are concerned with what a leader does. He is assertive, she is bold, they are direct, clear, vulnerable and so on…
Yet if you really look, you will find that knowing these things gives people no access to being them.
We all kind of know what a great leader shall do, yet when we are honest, we also know that in many situations that's not how we are showing up.
How come?
Because knowing about something doesn't touch the place of being. Knowing is a conceptual domain. It is entirely mental.
That's why in the year-long training in which we master the art of leadership and self-expression we are not concerned with knowing about leadership or self-expression.
But rather we are looking at what's getting in the way of our being leaders.
Our model for reality — and the model for most trainings — goes the following way.
First you have to learn X, and when you have learned enough X you will be Y.
When we learn enough about leadership we will be a leader...
And there are millions of courses, books and videos out there based on this premise.
And there are very few leaders and self-expressed people to be found.
In the work we do we start at a different point. We start with the being, not the knowing. We don't relate to people as incomplete but as complete. We don't relate to them as not-yet leaders but as leaders. The job of the training then is not to teach them how to be a leader, but rather to get out of the way what's in the way of being a leader.
It is a subtractive approach — one in which we empty our mental models of how we are supposed to be, and more and more of the being already there is able to get through.
Over the weekend we saw people getting lighter, more present, clearer, more self-expressed and able. By seeing through many things they thought they knew.
"In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few." - Shunryu Suzuki
We are looking forward to this journey together — discovering more of ourselves, more of our being a leader, by removing all that is not.
If you are interested in expanding your leadership and self-expression in life, a second cohort will be announced soon. Let us know if you want to be the first to receive the info.
